Now that our study of Theory and method course is coming to an end. As it goes "life is a journey to be savored with each step of the way",our course is like a wintage wine to be tasted with each sip of seminar. Although there were plenty conceptions and definitions to be learned every week, although there were numerous complicated and ambiguous ideas to be discussed every seminar, although there are still many questions I haven't figure out until now,our study is meaningful and unforgettable with sparks of wisdom shining inside all the time. Through the six themes, I developed myself both inside (gaining more knowledge) and outside (learning how to do a research in practice).
Initially , when it comes to the question: how to make a good research in media technology field, how can we answer it? Maybe having the basic methodology of perceiving the world and knowing the impact and aim of using media technique is a good idea. Through gaining the basic knowledge of reasearch, we can use different methods to enrich our plan and then make a better reasearch.Consequently, based on these points, this course is aimed at providing a deeper understanding of scientific theories, giving the basic knowledge of methodology, and supplying several useful reasearch methods to us for making a better scientific reasearch.Like the idea in "Critique of Pure Reason[1]",Kant suggest A priori is essential for perceiving the world. Similarly, getting the epistemology[2] is also crucial for the study of research, let alone qualitative method and quantitative method, which can help us improve our quality of research a lot. All these conceptions methods in each theme formed the systemic frame of our course.
Furthermore, new ideas always strike me while studying each theme. As is mentioned above, from Kant's perspective, subjects can be generated into twelve categories and form space and time, which is totally different from our common sense and thus gave me the new idea of gaining knowledge. We should not stay still, or we'll be far behind. Walter Benjamin's[3] story told us that we shall never take everything for granted.Time will change,so did techniques. The conception of portraying horses will change with the technique's development; the Fascism thoughts will rise with the confinement of public's thoughts.Dialecticly, advanced technique can lead to disaster while adversity can also lead to prosperity. Thus we need to have a better understanding of the benifits and limitations of media research and handle it in a scientific way. What we learned from theme 3 is the conception of research and how to tell from reasearch and theory. As we known from the lecture, theory origins from Greek word which means viewing or seeing.Theory is "a set of propositions"[4] and used to explain phenomena while research is related to practice.During the courses,we divided theory in to different types;we discussed a lot on research;we gain the knowledge of analysis. We armed ourselves by this knowledge not only for grasp the capacity of doing research, but also for holding the tendency of technique to avoide the tragedy rise agian which is in 1939-1945. As for theme 5, what striked me a lot is the importance of having a good idea. How can we let a stone float on the surface of water? The answer is "speed". That is to say, idea can arouse the wealth hiden deeply in the common practice. Haibo Li believe definding a problem is even important than solving it. Good idea finds the shortcut of solving problem, helps us form the prototype[5], accelerates the sepeed of gaining knowledge, which appears take the core of media research. As for theme 4 and theme 6,quantitative method and qualitative method compliment each other and helps us do a better research either in social science or natural sciences. You can not classify them either form the number of participant or form the length of analysis. What is deeply inside is that they are both used for us to gain knowledge with different types of gathering and analyzing information. Finally, reaching a even higher level in the last seminar,Ilias leads us a meaningful discussion of case study, which helps us do a better reseach using comparatively constant steps. To summarise, these themes helped me a lot and gave me a systematic way of doing media research.
Moreover, making comments helps me a lot. When I looked through the reflection written by other classmates, I always found some interesting points I'd never thought before. For instance, some classmates made an interesting expalantion on qualitative method with an idea that if we anaylze the information from qualtative method, the information which we gathered form the reseach will be narrowed down because when you gather some information form the interview or the expalantion told by participants, you should summarise the information first and other information will be leaked out. That is a quite intersting view I'd never tought before and I agree with what he explained. Whereas, only we summarize the information from the raw datas, can we find a more clear clue of this research. Apparently, we lose many information while analyzing it, but we transfer this raw data into more useful information in the end. Also, reading the comments on my reflection can fix my mistakes and improve my knowledge of each theme
Finally, thanks for the teacher and groupmates who helped me qiute much.During the lecture, I met plenty of questions which I can not solve by myself. While by asking the lecture leader, I rethought these questions and had new comprehension on them. Similarly, in the seminar, we made lots of intersting discussion and shared our view with others. For instance, I could not grasp the idea of case study[6] at first. While in the seminar, one of my groupmates had a excellent understanding on case study. He explained that a case study is a research strategy which focus on our comprehension and is a kind of guidance with clear steps for us to conduct study. This helped me a lot.
All in all, Theory and Method for Media Technology is an excellent course which is useful for me the whole life.
