Theme 5-pre: Design research

Turn Your Mobile Into the Ball: Rendering Live Football Game Using Vibration
Next week, we'll move forward to theme 5 design research. It is a useful theme helping us make a better experiment on subjects. Firstly, I read the article " Turn Your Mobile Into the Ball: Rendering Live Football Game Using Vibration[1]". It is very interesting. In this paper, sciencists used a new method to render live football game on mobile phones. By working out a good coding scheme, they used the vibration for sending information to us successfully. This is a interesting and great idea to control the vibration of phones to provide information to us.Here are the questions about the article as follows:
How can media technologies be evaluated?
As for evaluating the media technology, we can evaluate its effectiveness and its potential impact that can promote the progress of media technology. If one essay just poses questions on some theory in media field,it is also useful and can evoke our re-think on this theory.
What role will prototypes play in research?
In technology researches, a prototype is  a kind of technology demonstrator which is one model of a theory or a technique. It is vey useful for us because it can provide a full-vision perspect of the new idea, which can help us have a more clear understanding on it. Also it can prove the new technnology's viability and illustrate conceivable applications[2].
Why could it be necessary to develop a proof of concept prototype?
In my perspective, if there is no proof of concept prototype, this kind of prototype can not be called prototype. We can not know whether it is feasible besause we do not know thether it is true or false. Although we still can drop out the proof, it will be inconvincible. So Ithink it is necessary to develop a proof.
What are characteristics and limitations of prototypes?
Prototype is not the ultimate edition of a theory or a technology. It is just a sample which consist the basic founction of the project. Is shows the general use of this technique and  shows the prospect of the project. Through the test of the prototype,we can find many bugs shortage and deficiency of the project.Consequently,we can improve our theory or technique. Obviously, the limitation of the prototype is that it has many deficiencies and need to be improved.
How can design research be communicated/presented?
From my perspective,if we introduce our design research to others,we should present the deficiency of the previous one and what we will do to improve this kind of research. By stating the procedue of our design research, people will have an overview of it.Then we can also present our prototype to let people know the prospect of our design research.
Finding design qualities in a tangible programming space & Differentiated Driving Range
On "Finding design qualities in a tangible programming space[3]"and "Differentiated Driving Range[4]", here are some questions for me to answer:
Can practical design work in itself be considered a 'knowledge contribution'?
Of cours I think practical design work in itself can be considered a contribution of knowledge. In history, there were losts of philosophers using metaphysic method to establish there logical conception which make great impact on later modern science. I think philosiphy is an extreme type of practical design. When making a practical design, we could have new idea from it,which will also evoke the considerarion in any other theory.
Are there any differences in design intentions within a research project, compared to design in general?
The intention of research project usually consists of some specific aims at solving problems in some limited field.Whereas, research projection could consider much detailed data in realizing the project and use very systemic method to achieve this. such as design  , peparation , analysis ,etc. On the contrary, dedign in general can be not aimed at specific field and can be designed in different ways.
Is research in tech domains such as these ever replicable? How may we account for aspects such as time/historical setting, skills of the designers, available tools, etc?
Of course research in tech domains can be replicabe. There are different reason accout for this.If you want to find the deficiencies of previous research , you want to test the reseach by using different devices or you want to find some improvable ponits in previous research ,you both can replicate it.
Are there any important differences with design driven research compared to other research practices?
The main difference between design driven research and other research practices is that design driven research is based ondesign and analyzing how to achieve the project.
