Theme 4-reflection:Quantitative research

These days, we discussed about "Quantitative methods" and "Qualitative methods". At first, merely looking it up on the webpage, I misunderstood their meaning. Firstly, I think quantitative method is gathering data from experiment or research, and it contains no explanation and conclusion. While in the discussion in this seminar, I knew that no matter "Quantitative methods" and "Qualitative methods", they can both contain explanation and conclusion. The conclusion in "Quantitative methods" is related to data and statistic and in "Qualitative methods" conclusion is related to your own ideas about what causes phenomena to happen.
Normally, quantitative method is widely used in the field of Chemistry, Physics, Biology, etc. On the contrary, qualitative methods are widely used in anthropology, archaeology, Human geography, etc. The common aspects of the two is that they can both provide knowledge for us. That is to say, they are both meaningful. For example, there are 10 chairs at the room and we can divide them into two groups: the tall-chair group and short-chair group. Do we use quantitative methods by doing these? Maybe not. If there is no relevant context, we seldom regarded this kind of way of classification as quantitative method because it contains less information for us to generate knowledge, in other words, it is meaningless. Quantitative method is a kind of procedure which gathers data and statistic to give us better understanding on the phenomena and experiment.  Quantitative method can also contains conclusion and explanation, but this conclusion and explanation is generated by the analysis of data. This data could be put in to a diagram or a chat, but it should be meaningful. Compared with quantitative methods, qualitative methods always consist the explanation of why and how. It draw the conclusion from analyzing the phenomena without statistic and bring forward some questions with no need of answering. It is interesting that although these two methods can not convert to each other all the time, they can improve the research’s quality if you convert each other properly. For instance, as for research of analyzing the situation of the poverty in London, we can use quantitative method to conduct it by making questionnaire for the beggar. Also, we can be dressed up as a pauper and live with other beggars for one or two weeks. In this way, we could record their normal life and chat with them to know their real need by listening their complaint. Instead of making questionnaire, we can use the qualitative method to analyze the situation of the poverty in a sociable way to improve our research.
Thanks for the impressive article "Drumming in Immersive Virtual Reality[1]", from which I know that we can also improve our article by combining them. Before we design an experiment, we could use qualitative method to analysis which kind of experiment is the best for us to choose. Similarly, after we construct an argument from results,we can also use qualitative method to take a further step of analysis and make prediction on it. Combining qualitative method and quantitative method can successfully flesh our articles

  1. Thanks for sharing us with your thoughts! I really enjoyed reading through your reflection toward the lecture and the seminar, which are neatly and well written. Your idea inspired me a lot, especially the idea that "qualitative method and quantitative method could be both explanation for the reason and the conclusion". Good job!

  2. Hi!

I enjoyed reading your reflections and found it interesting to read the reflections of someone that didn't know exactly what quantitative and qualitative methods are beforehand. I feel that I haven't learned that much during this week since I've actually used these methods myself so it is good to see that you've learned a lot. I think your understanding of qualitative and quantitative research methods are good and I agree that using them together or converting one to the other can improve the results.

  3. Hi,

Your reflections are always very interesting. You have a nice way to write about things, and your descriptions are easy to follow and understand! In addition, you didn’t have any background knowledge on the theme compared to most of us but I feel like you have done a good job and you have well understood the subject. I also enjoy reading your post this week, because you gave some helpful examples and most of us didn’t. I agree with you that the quality of the research could be improved by choosing the right method or the combination of those. Thanks for sharing!

  4. Hi,
According to your description of the central concepts and cases you used to support your views,I think you really have probed and summarized a lot in this week. It's really interesting to know how we are conscious to do something with quantitative methods in our life, even if they seem meaningless as you said. Actually,We just naturally and unconsciously get involved in the rules to use our abilities for judging the objects. By the way, very enjoy to your clear and structured content. Thanks for sharing

  5. Hi, very insighful. You shows more detailed description of these two methods and i am enjoy reading it. Cause i have already learned them before, i do not have so many new feeling like you. However, reviewing your post make me straightened out my mind for that two methods. I think i got one or two new points now. Thank you so much for sharing your post. Nice work!

  6. It is good to see that you learned much from this weeks theme, and it's even better that you give an explanation for all your points instead of just listing them.

Good job covering the theme, and it was refreshing reading a different experience than most others during this week.

  7. Hi,
Great summary on this week’s theme! You pointed out different fields where the two methods can be used and how they can provide knowledge. Your text is structured and concise which makes it easy to read. I agree on that this week’s theme was a lot easier than the ones concerning philosophical concepts. Many of us have done a thesis previously and know about qualitative and quantitative methods.

  8. Hi,
Thank you for your reflection. You always write something interesting and easy to follow. Through your reflection,I have a general impression of what you wrote. As far as I know, I agree that quantitative method and qualitative method are both important for doing research and I agree that they both can gaher knowledge for us. However, I don't agree that qualitative method and quantitative method can transform into each other because they have the different stress point and they contain different methods. You can not use a qualitative method to gather information instead of quantitative method
Thank s for your interesting reflection.

  9. Hi,
Thanks for your sharing. What impressed me most in this theme is the paper written by Ilias. In his article, he both used the quantitative method and qualitative method and I think his research is quite interesting because it is related to self cognition in virtual world. If there were not quantitative method, Ilias would not gather the data in such a precise way;if there were not qualitative method, Ilias would not explain the feeling of participants in detail. All in all, quantitative methods and qualitative method helped us a lot.
    Thanks. Keep it up.
