This week, our seminar is based on the topic "Qualititative and case study research". Although we've learned much of the qualitivative method in the last seminar, I am still confused about it. It's hard for me to tell from the quantitative method and qualitative method in one paper. To had a better comprehension of the qualitative method and the case stusy, I read the " Building Theories from Case Study Research" and found out two papers to study on.
From discussing the papers in our group, I have new knowledge about the qualitative method and case study research. In the group, we discussed that If we do a questionnire which divide the answer in to different levels and without asking question , it would be the quantitative method and we can make ANOVA on it. Meanwile, if we make a interview, it would be the qualitative method because we have to explain our research to the participants , chat with them, analyze the feedback and review perticipants' explanation. From this empirical data, we can gain our knowldege beyond statistics. Similarly, if the questionnaire contains some questions that need participants' explanation, it would be the mixture of qualitative method and quantitative method.
As for case study, it is a totally new concept for me. Thanks for my excellent groupmates, they made me get it clear a bout what the case study is. To sum up, a case study is a a research strategy which focus on our comprehension and helps us make better steps on conducting the research from coming up with an idea to finnally evaluating it. Case study is a procedure strategy containing different methods that helps do the ressearch more efficiently and scientifically. What's the difference between qualitative method and case study? A case study is more like a series of procedures. First, we should come up with some ideas on a specific issue and then choose the best idea to consuct it and after that, collect the information and data etc. Whereas qualitative mehod is just a kind of method. So case study can contains qualitative method or quantitative method or both of them.
What is interesting in the seminar is that since the case study is a strategy, how can we write all the information we met into our paper ? Maybe we don't need to. Since the paper is limited in length, we can not put all the procces of case study into a paper. Instead, we should narrow it down and make what is useful for our gaining knowledge into our paper.
All in all , this seminar helped me a lot.

Sound like you have really grasped both the concept of quantitative and qualitative methods as well as case studies. You have displayed you findings in an easy and understandable way that is enjoyable to read, great job! The limited length of papers is an interesting note, with the advent of digital technology our capacity has surely increased a lot. The bigger problem I believe is if people really want to read a study that is 10 000+ pages long
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI have read a lot of your post and I believe that always you work hard and try to improve yourself and your knowledge. I think that you did the same this week too. Looks like you have understand completely now the qualitative and the quantitative methods. However, I couldn’t get very well your reflection on case study, in some points sound like it is the same with design. It is interesting that you talked about the case study length since we didn't in our seminar. Do you mean that the paper of case studies should not exceed a specific lenght? It would be nice if you expand on that a bit more.
Nice reflection! It is great that the concept of qualitative research became clearer for you during this theme, it was already pretty clear to me but I did learn more about different kinds of qualitative methods. I usually distinct qualitative and quantitative by the kind of data they produce, qualitative produce longer texts while quantitative produce data which can often be numerically compared.
ReplyDeleteNice reflection overall! Great work.
it took me so much time to find a paper with qualitative method because every paper seem to be using quantitative to me. because i didn’t understand that questionnaire can be a mixture if they have an open question. i originally thought all questionnaire consider quantitative.
ReplyDeletein the paper i read about case study. they also have the same problem like you said. they find it hard to write things down to be a report paper. since case study is very detailed and sometimes it is hard to convert information they get into letters.
nice reflects :)
Hi, thank you for your final reflection.
ReplyDeleteGreat that you reflect on how your group contributes to your learning. I agree that it can be confusing to find a paper and distinguish if they have used qualitative or quantitative methods. Great that you pointed out that a case study can use qualitative methods.
I did not quite understand how you comprehended case studies. I suggest that a case study seeks out to create new knowledge by studying an unfamiliar event in a specific context.

ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your reflection and I enjoyed it a lot. I agree with you that if the questionnaire contains the questions which need the explanation of the participants, it will be qualitative method.Similarly ,if we divide the answer into different levels ,it will be quantitative method. Also, questionnaire can contain both method of them. As for the case study, from my point of view ,it does not contains specific hypothesis and it helps us grasp the research better
Thanks for your reflection.Keep it up
